Quadra 700 W/ Brown Motherboard
Posted by: belgaonkar on 2016-03-20 17:00:57
I found a Quadra 700 with a brown Motherboard, i have never seen a brown MoBo Quadra. I think the code name was Sipke PVT for the Quadra 700, but that featured a red MoBo. What do you guys think this brown Quadra 700 is?

I do not think any protos from the 68k period around the 700 used red motherboards. Could be wrong, but at this moment none come to mind. More often the silk-screen was a different color - but that is not always the case. If its a pre-productioin, one can tell by the part number on the board, etc.

As for brown. If its what I think it is, then its normal. Just another OCB color.

Pics would help.

Thanks, here is the inside. Most 700's use a green PCB.

I see you found the dual Q700 posting on eBay. I made an offer on the units and the seller did not want to budge, so I passed. Brown boards were just another flavor if I recall, before Green became the standard during the PCI era, but it is all a little fuzzy now.

Yep, as an update I ran the serial numbers. The brown one is number 7,000 something and the green one is number 14,000 and change.

Just an ordinary board. It may even have to do with production location of the board. I have Classic boards that come in two colors also.

I have a Spike PVT machine, it's a green board. 😉

Green logic boards turn brown when exposed to UV too. I left my 6500 board out in the sun after giving it a full-on soak to dry.

It went out green, came back brown where the light hit it (everywhere except the shade under a sticker)

The color of the board is just the color of solder mask they happened to use. Solder mask is a laminate coating applied to the board after all the electrical bits are fabricated. It is available in many different colors, but green is most common.

It is worth noting that sometime around 2009 Apple has gone to a very dark uniform black on their circuit boards, even the oem ram is the same color.
