Apple 20SC problem
Posted by: Tagman on 2021-01-02 15:46:19
My Apple 20SC external hard Drive just started acting up.   It had been working fine but now is acting weird.  I hadn't used it in a while but just recently recapped my Mac Plus I used the Hard Drive yesterday but today when the activity light is showing solid red after powered up?   I have the Mac in the top port and the SCSI terminator in the bottom port as I always have.  The drive spins up but there's no activity.   If I launch the SCSI utility (6.0.8) it does not see the 20SC, however if I remove the terminator it does recognize the drive, but I can't format it or test it as I would expect without a terminator.   I did check the voltage on the 20SC PSU and get ~5volts on the yellow wire and ~10+ volts on the 12v wire (without any load).

The Caps all look pretty good.   I also cleaned all the contacts on the cables, terminator, etc..   Could the terminator have gone bad??  I've never experienced that before, but if I power up the drive without the terminator the status light doesn't stay solid and as I said the SCSI utility recognized the drive ONLY with the terminator removed

Stumped....

I do have a new terminator coming from E-bay.    Also, if I do replace the drive with a 3.5" drive what's the best way to mount it in the case?

Thanks!!!

There is a bracket that the 5.25" drive is bolted to that can be removed. It should have mounting holes for a 3.5" drive.

Caps can look fine but be dried out, it may be worth recapping and see if it resolves the issue.
