Mac SE, every so often brightness variation
Posted by: LaPorta on 2020-12-25 16:35:37
My main-use SE has developed a curious issue. Every so often (maybe a few minutes), the screen will suddenly get noticeably brighter by a bit, then later, back down a tad bit darker to where it was before. It is not huge: I only noticed it when using the SE in a darker environment. However, it is noticeable, and it could be the harbinger of a larger issue in the future, so I want to nail it now. This machine has been fully re-capped, with a great CRT, and otherwise the screen works perfectly without any issues at all.

Ideas as to what might cause this?

I'd look at the brightness pots, both the external and the trim.

External seems to work just fine, raising or lowering it doesn't seem to affect this.

Poor neck board connection?

Did you deoxit the pots?
