SSD in Duo 280c?
Posted by: jdlanza on 2020-10-19 04:42:42
Anyone have recommendations for IDE to SATA adaptors that fit in the Duo’s form factor?  I’m recapping a 280c and figure I should take advantage of having it open!

Thanks,

johnl

Pretty sure the drive in a Duo is a SCSI drive, not an IDE, so at the moment your main choice is the SCSI2SD Powerbook edition(which appears to be sold out on the official site)

There's a couple of other SCSI hard drive emulators in the works, (RASCSI, and the arduino based one), but as far as I know neither are in the 2.5" form factor that the Powerbook uses

SCSI2SD PowerBook Edition is pretty much your only option at present, whenever they're back in stock. There are some adapters out there to get the regular SCSI2SD adapter to work in a PowerBook, but that ads to the overall cost a fair bit

I've been experimenting with the IDE to SCSI bridge salvaged from a broken PowerBook 520C, but haven't gotten anywhere. I've tried Compact Flash to IDE adapters, SD to IDE adapters, straight up IDE SSDs; and none of them want to work with the bridge.

Yup, you’re right.  Not sure why I thought it was IDE....thanks!

The 2300c can be either IDE or SCSI from memory - so perhaps you were thinking of that?

@aladds, could have been!  Or I was starting to look ahead to the 3400 project I have on my table!  I suppose I'm cooling my heels on the Duo project until the PowerBook edition SCS2SD are back in stock......

Reach out to Inertial Computing (they're active on the forum). They may or may not still be looking for beta testers for a potential v5.5-based replacement to the out-of-stock (out of production?) previous PowerBook edition.  Such a device, hypothetically speaking of course, might appear as pictured below within my 180c, where it may have been working flawlessly for the past week 🙂

Alternately, @360alaska is making a nifty sled and adapter for use with the standard v5.5 and has them listed for sale on the auction site.

It looks like the v5.5 PowerBook Edition may now be in stock, https://store.inertialcomputing.com/product-p/scsi2sd-v5.5-2.5-inch.htm lists 22 in stock.

Inertial Computing may have something different to say, of course, but SCSI2SD is a relatively well-developed product, so there probably won't be a beta test of this new form factor. Although, the project does accept bug reports, so if you get one and find an error and can track down what's causing it or help troubleshoot, they'll incorporate fixes into new ROM versions.

I'd have to go look, but on the PowerBook 5x0 series, the way this played out is that all of the boards were SCSI and either a SCSI disk could be installed directly, or an IDE disk could be installed via an adapter/interposer board.  This was, as my understanding goes, how the ~1GB disk configurations were set up.

It sounds like those adapters might not play well with IDE-to-something-else conversions, however, so your best bet on using one may be finding an IDE laptop disk from like 1994-1995.

Yep!. The 2300c had two different connectors, one SCSI one IDE, however they use different interconnect flex cables so check which one you have first.
