68030 CPU Swap
Posted by: warmech on 2020-10-13 05:33:39
After working on my IIx to get it up and running, I've been wondering about something. I have a dead, and almost certainly unrepairable, IIfx (there's something screwy going on in the NuBus section, in addition to exploded batteries that I've been fruitlessly repairing damage from) with a 40MHz 030 in it that I know works. Can the 16MHz 030 in the IIx be pulled and swapped out with the 40MHz 030 in the IIfx, or is there a fundamental architecture issue that would prevent this?

Yes, it will function at 16Mhz in the IIx.

I assume the crystal provides timing for other stuff on the motherboard...is there a way to isolate any of it such that you can increase the clock for the CPU without affecting anything else?

The crystal determines the speed of the CPU in the 68K machines.  So a 40MHz CPU in a 16MHz board will run as a 16MHz CPU.
