| Imac g5 20" 1.8ghz shuts down after a couple minutes |

Just got in a G5 Imac 20" 1.8ghz machine that shuts down after a few minutes of running. The other G5 Imacs I have just never booted but turned on and stayed on (after a recap they work 100%). Is this just in need of a recap or is the power supply suspect?

I suspect the power supply, particularly if the system is behaving normally until the shutdown. I've replaced power supplies on two first gen iMac G5s and both are still going strong.

I agree with the power supply, but while apart the radials on the motherboard would be a great idea.

I looked inside, none of the caps are domed like in my other Imacs. Will swap supplies and see how it goes I guess. Are all 20" Imac G5 supplies the same?

Took the power supply out and took it apart. There were a couple bad solder joints and it looks like a bunch of capacitors were replaced (correct values but wrong physical size). Seems to work fine now after doing a new OSX 10.5.x install and updates (over an hour) so I guess its fixed.
The machine came with a 10.5.4 retail DVD in the optical drive and an Apple 400GB HD but not a HD rail so it just sits there snug. Not too bad I guess for a simple fix and a very cheap price.

661-3289 is the part listed for your unit. I am unsure if it's interchangeable with the 2nd gen (ambient light sensor) 20" iMac G5. I'm pretty certain it's not interchangeable with the iSight models. Fingers crossed your repair does the trick!
