It should be noted that the reason why AIM was abandoned was that the authentication method is not secure, so keep that in mind. That being said... it's just chat and probably noone uses this anymore, just a cool nostalgic blast from the past.
If I can ever find a library that implements the OSCAR protocol, I would like to write a middleware that interfaces the AIM client with something like facebook messenger or signal, and can be run on a raspberry pi. I started doing that three years ago by reverse engineering an AIM session pcap, but it was kind of a mess, and life got busy.

It is crazy, as late as 2011 I was working on a PM 7100 and doing school projects and collaborating on AIM. I think it was around 2017 that they shut it down. I am surprised they waited that long.
