Macintosh Plus memory upgrade boards.. Why?

So what was the purpose of the memory upgrade boards for the Macintosh Plus?   Were they simply cheaper than buying the 1MB SIMMs?

I'm working on a new entry for my site that lists the different accelerators for the Plus (linking to reviews/adds when I find them), and am debating listing memory addons too, but I don't know if many people use them.

I’ve wondered this too.  I don’t see how they could have been cheaper than the SIMMs, since I’m pretty sure some/all of these were just little daughtercards with SIMMs on them.

I had wondered if some of these were just companies like Dove having an easy way to market “memory upgrade boards” to people who were used to products like the MacSnap but weren’t quite familiar yet with the idea that you could just buy SIMMs and pop them in, plus opening up your Mac is Scary and Voids The Warranty.

See: Cooling Down on page 143. There were all kinds of funny notions floating about in that era when it came to upgrades. Concern regarding melting the top louvers over the A/B of Macs was not one of them.
