New SE/30 now what?
Posted by: mc9625 on 2016-03-01 14:38:59
So, the se/30 is working fine now (I still have to recap the motherboard and change the hdd with a scsi2sd, but I will do it in the next days). I've got 4mb flying to me somewhere between here (Rome) and US and finally floppy emu works.

I've loaded a couple of games (of course) and installed in dual boot system 7.1 and 6.0.8.

But now could you suggest some great app or use for this lovely little compact Mac ? Unfortunately I am a relative new apple user (more or less ten years) so I haven't much knowledge of the "golden Mac system era". So any suggestion will be appreciated.

Btw of course I would love to connect the se/30 to Internet but, if I well understand, find a network card is almost impossible nor cheap at all.

I forget the name of the app; but it preserves the System 6 & System 7 Desktops, so when you switch systems the Mac does not go into "Rebuilding Desktop" mode every time.

You are correct, the ethernet cards are not cheap nor easy to find. There are alternatives, but if you really plan to use your machine, its best to just pony up for the card.

Do you really want to run the SE/30 on the net or just need to transfers files around once in a while? An external ZIP/SyQuest/Jazz/etc drive would work for file transfers if you have another machine to connect them to (plenty of beige and G3/G4 machines have zip drives).

Also, if its just transfer to another machine, you always have localtalk

I found the network cards cheap on ebay, i brought the se/30 and network card for £175

Lucky you SE30_Neal! There is currently just one card but they ask 180€, this is too much for me now.

Actually I would like to connect the se/30 to Internet, just for fun of course. Maybe to use it with a light email client or something (a Twitter client would be terrific but I guess there's nothing like that). I know it will not be speedy at all, but I don't care. Maybe one day I will try to make a connection via raspberry pi!

Actually floppy emu is a good solution for file transfer. It's annoying to split everything in 1.5 mob disk image, but I can leave with it.

Unfortunately I haven't any AppleTalk capable Mac now.

Thanks Elfen good tip. I will search for that app, it's a waste of time to rebuild the desktop every time I switch os.

You could buy a bridge machine and appletalk cable, i was recommended to do that so just brought a powerbook 1400 for $40 its in the post now, i need a pcmcia card (extra) but i should then be able to link my mac mini and se/30 together via the bridge machine its will also make it easier to download software etc speak to Elfen as he recommended i buy a bridge machine

Elfen the program you were referring to is the Apple Desktop Manager Extension. Unfortunately I cannot find it anywhere (the name is too generico also for a proper search). Does anyone has it?
