Replace 190cs display with 5300c advice
Posted by: stormy on 2020-08-19 07:05:22
Hi all,

I read many times on the internet that you can swap the passive matrix LCD in the 190cs with an active matrix LCD from a 5300c.

Well I was lucky enough to find a new old stock LCD screen for a 5300c. I fitted it inside my 190cs bezel no problem. But the machine only shows white, I can hear it loading the OS in the background etc but just white light on the display.

I'm not sure if it is to do with the fact that I replaced the screen alone, not the entire screen assembly like some others may have done.

Any thoughts? Thanks

I took a quick look at the service source. It was unhelpful in terms of part numbers. Saw mention of doing a power manager reset on top of zapping the PRAM. Screen goes dark on that model sometimes during startup, but I think not white?

Are you sure the part was NOS or may it have been in the repair part box? I got a NOS IIsi board in the repair part box that had a bad power switch. Seller has an impeccable reputation, I've bought from him many times. We came to the conclusion that I wound up with the swapped out board in the replacement part's box. I hope that's not what happened to you?

No it was definitely brand new, even had all the nice plastic peel all over.

What I've found is that the display ribbon connector is slightly different for each type of LCD they used, so I've ordered a spare part for exactly this 5300c display. We will see.

That makes sense, hopefully the wrong one didn't do any damage. You've got me wondering if a 5300ce panel/cable might work in the 190? Can't imagine so, but upping the resolution would be fantastic.

edit: did the side/by-side/by-side comparison thing on everymac. VRAM's the same on 190cs-5300c and 5300ce. I'd imagine they planned ahead for the 5300ce's 800x600 panel when they designed the 5300c's video subsystem, not for the 190? Then again, they did release them all in 1995: https://everymac.com/systems/by_year/macs-released-in-1995.html

It seems crazy that they don't have part numbers in the Service Source, but they'd have swapped out the entire lid in the field and yours is probable a leftover factor part?

I bought it from a really old apple parts supplier in the UK, they weren't even sure if they still had it when I called but it was still listed on their inventory. Luckily they did. Got the new cable arriving tomorrow, I'll let you know the results.

I think it should be ok as the display wakes up and shuts down without issues, it might be that the cable doesn't include the V/H sync information required by an active display.

Ohhh yeah, with the proper display cable it has come to life.

Very nice! Having recently gone through the no display signal / white screen song and dance, I know just how satisfying it is to finally see video output 🙂

Yeah these cables are so delicate! Perhaps I should massage it in olive oil before sealing it back away lol 🙂

Beautiful, the only thing I'd suggest is using high temp canola oil. 😀 If I didn't have at least a baker's dozen project boxes and contents strewn about, I'd be checking an 800x600 5300ce lid in that configuration, but that bug's in the bonnet. :🙂
