From SE to SE/30 - and back
Posted by: blindowl on 2020-08-17 04:12:28
I have a junk SE/30 that was manufactured as an SE, but later upgraded to an SE/30. Unfortunately, the logic board is beyond rescue so the computer has mostly been used for parts and collecting dust on a shelf.

The other day I found a new analog board and a logic board for an SE. Both looked to be in mint condition, maybe NOS, and didn't cost much, so I bought them.

So now the SE/30 is restored back to an SE. Even though the front panel still says SE/30.

It has a SuperDrive in it, but due to the SE's limitations, it can now only handle 800 k disks. Which of course is a little unfortunate.

And unfortunately, the display is in pretty bad condition. I was hoping that replacing the analog board would help, but the problem seems to be the display itself. Maybe I'll try to transplant the screen from a junk Classic I have, I'll think about it... Otherwise it runs great now!

I also took the opportunity to retrobrite the rear case, which was very yellow (it's from the original SE) and didn't match the front (from the SE/30 upgrade).
