Unused SE analog board
Posted by: blindowl on 2020-08-13 23:06:51
I got this NOS Mac SE analog board today. Looks like it is in good condition. Does anyone know if I need to take any precautions with an old, unused board like this? Or can I just swap an old board with the new? Recap it I guess? But other than that? I can see that the trimpots R26 and R27 does not match the setting of my current board at all. Not sure what they do, though?

Do you need to swap it? What is the issue you are having?

No, maybe I don't... My initial thought was to use it, just "because it's new"... But now I'm having second thoughts. But the display in this machine has som issues. Quite low brightness with some weird shadowing going on. Maybe it's the display itself that has issues, or maybe the analog board, I'm not sure?

If you could repair the analog board, that would be great in and of itself. NOS parts can also have issues just from age despite not having been used. Capacitors will age just because, not from use (though that will certainly make the lifetime less). All in all, any piece of equipment that old should be gone through before put to general use. I personally would keep it in it's box for the future, but that is just me...it's yours!

Plus if I were you, I would make "sure" that it is NOS. most of the time they are not, techs dump the junk parts back in the boxes and its thrown on the shelf to be discovered by someone later to be sold as new....

Ive been burned several times this way, so I quit buying "apple service parts" from that era.

I replaced the board in one of my Macs, just to try it. Works fine so far anyway. Yeah true, I have no idea if it really is NOS, but it looks unused. But I wasn't really hunting for a new AB, I just stumbled upon it. So I'm happy to have a spare AB! 🙂
