ShareWay IP Standard 3.0 (not Personal, not Pro)

https://web.archive.org/web/20060319065129/http://www2.opendoor.com/shareway/ShareWay3.0Standard.hqx

This works with AppleShare Pro 4.0.2 for 68k machines with 7.6.1, (maybe earlier).

If you run the File Server App, and then Launch ShareWay IP, you can connect to 7.6.1 machines with AppleTalk TCP/IP (7/8/9) and in Snow Leopard 10.6.8!!!  So great!!

Especially, if you have loud PPC machines, but quiet 68k and x86 machines 😀

I'd never looked at this product before, it's pretty neat. For the best overview of what it's actually doing, check here: http://opendoor.biz/shareway/ShareWayEditions.html#pe

The quick version is that it's a standalone version of the file sharing control panel in Mac OS 9, which supported the Apple File Protocol over TCP/IP as well as AppleTalk.

If you just need a client, you can still use AppleShare 3.8.3 here: http://main.system7today.com/updates.htmlfor your version of System 7 (I usually install and use 7.6.1) and you can then connect to OS X up through 10.6, OS 9, Windows NT/2000/2003's AFP server, as well as Netatalk 2. (I need to do some research into Netatalk 3.)

Windows NT and Netatalk 2, if configured just so will also provide AppleTalk to an Ethernet network, as well as modern AFP over TCP/IP, and you can of course set up samba or ssh access from your newer machines, which may be a good way to do up a bridge system, especially if you've got some kind of LocalTalk Bridge.

If you connect to your 68k mac, via Snow / Leopard, and you get some -## errors, just make sure when you start your machine up, before you fire up Server or Shareway, trash the Shareware prefs first, or every startup, and it works like a charm.

Edited the title because "ShareWay IP 3.0!" ran off the end in preview

Also come to find out, if you have either a file name >8 character or with a dot extension like, MPW-GM.img, if you make it MPWGM and copy that over you won't get an error.  This is only with Snow Leopard to 7.6.1, not Tiger, (Leopard haven't tried)

It's because of the deprecation of the old mac file formats in Snow Leopard, I believe...

Just a tip!

Can it be used with AppleTalk printers as well, as an IP bridge? Or does it work with filesharing only?

That's a good one, I don't have an old school "68k/PPC classic" printer to test on.  I don't think so tho because I believe it's sharing only but I can't say for sure, because I have shown up on the Mac OS X sidebar in the finder.,,
