Quadra 610 SCSI fun
Posted by: EmmyOcelot on 2020-05-20 08:36:14
Hello everyone I need some help as to what could be going on.

I have been working on a Quadra 610 that can boot from floppy but downright refuses to show the cd drive (AppleCD 300 Plus) or the the hard disk (IBM-H3171-S2)

Here's what (I think) I know:

I don't believe that it's a matter of the SCSI order as the cd and hard disk are set to different id numbers.

I don't think the board is bad since I don't see any corrosion on the board

So I have a few questions:

Could something be dead?

How could I test the SCSI drives without an OS?

What should I do?

I can send pictures if needed to help out.

Thanks in advance

If you haven't already, you have to clean and recap the logic board. That caused me no end of SCSI problems until I recapped mine.

Ok, I'll go look for a recapping service then. Any recommendation?

Also, you sure it's not anything else? I ask just because until I can get it recapped, I wanted to know what I could do until then.

The order on the SCSI cable matters. Whichever drive is last needs to have termination enabled. Have you checked that?

Plus, blusnowkity is right - if the capacitors are going, that'd definitely explain issues.

The order on it goes:

The motherboard

cd drive

hard disk

Would that mean the cd drive needs to be terminated?

Last thing for now, i'm seeing a few options for recapping service. I know if I did it, I would break it.

So, who would you recommend? Who to go to or stay away from?

The motherboard

cd drive

hard disk
Since the last device is the hard drive, then the hard drive needs to be terminated. Many Apple-shipped SCSI CD drives didn't have termination, anyway.

I see. I will use a jumper then To terminate it. Thanks for all the help. Hope to find a recap service  soon.

My experience with the Quadra 610 is that it's a fussy machine; I'd clean around the caps (dip a cotton bud in isopropyl alcohol  and wipe around each cap to see invisible crud), remove any visible corrosion first and double check your SCSI ID, termination issues before recapping.

You can make up a boot floppy with SCSIProbe, and the patched Drive Setup 1.5 to detect the devices.

So, I am going to test the pins on the scsi bus. However does anyone know where i could get the Macintosh quadra 610 schematics from?

Alright, round 2!

Bit of an update: After much time and sparks, the Q610 is recapped. After following the idea of cleaning the cap areas and setting the termination jumpers correctly (HDD=0, CD = 3), i'm still stuck. No drives show and scsiprobe show the bus still as not terminated.  Can anyone guide me as to what I should do? If pictures are needed, I'll send some

🙁

Just a question for you:  What caps did you install on your Q610?  I ask because I put a set on mine that I thought I would test out (higher voltage) and it made the system not recognize SCSI similar to yours.  I then desoldered the caps I freshly installed, and went back to my normal capacitors and voila! it worked perfectly.

I used 16v 47μf caps for all of them

The ohms ratings (resistance) vary among different caps.  What ohms (resistance) are they ?

I just tested them and they're around 8 MΩ.

uxcell doesn't have them listed either.

I don’t use the multimeter a lot so please tell me if I really mess up on that.

I've got the amazon link here

I ordered some 47uF ±10% 16V 1.5 Ω and they did not play well on the Q610.  They were these ones:

https://lcsc.com/product-detail/Tantalum-Capacitors_CEC-Shenzhen-Zhenhua-XinYun-Elec-CA45-D-16V-47uF-K_C140430.html

I replaced them with 47uF ±10% 16V 1 Ω @ 100kHz and it worked fine after.  They were these ones:

So it seems the resistance matters a bit.  Also ripple seems to matter, and different caps have a different amount of ripple.

Where are you located ?

Florida. Also wow had no idea the resistance would matter to that degree.

just a couple of possibilities here for your consideration.

If you haven't already done so, you may wish to see if the SCSI data cable is seated properly. Once upon a time that plagued me on an IBM ps2 8580.

Also, another possibility is that your machine has suffered a data cable failure. I had an IDE drive I knew was good simply quit in machine i was working on. I tested another good drive on the same cable, and it failed to start up as well. I finally figured out it was the cable at fault. But who would suspect that a data cable would ever quit? I believe it had been pinched some how, and my moving the cable had caused one or more of the copper lines to break along the pinched area. This could be something to check for your machine.

I’ll give that a shot. I have a second scsi cable so let’s see what happens
