| SE/30 socketed - Which processors? |
Posted by: joshc on 2020-05-18 21:58:49 Get ready for today's silly question...
Which processors and what clock speeds are supported in the socketed version of the SE/30 logic board, without an accelerator?
There's a lot of 68030s on eBay but they seem to be at higher clock speeds than the stock 16MHz, would they work? I am assuming not, or would they work but just run at a slower clock speed?

A lot of chips on eBay especially when they’re coming from China are relabeled slower parts anyways.

Are the sockets still available from anywhere? Can a non-socketed board be converted into a socketed one, is it as simple as desoldering the processor and soldering a socket in?

I bought my last set of sockets from China only a few weeks ago. Non socketed boards can just be converted by soldering in a socket.
That was an even option back then when you wanted to get a Daystar upgrade but didn't have a socketed board you'd have to send it in to Daystar to have a socket fitted.

Thanks @Bolle

Be very careful if you try this. I ruined a beautiful SE/30 board attempting this. I ended up pulling out about a dozen vias.
