G5 Quad PCIe SATA Controller Card
Posted by: e1z0 on 2020-05-17 22:50:31
Hi,

I've been searching whole internet for PCIe card for my G5 Quad Late 2005, I've just noticed that only SATA II interface card exist for this system it's https://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2me4-e/spec/ and supports booting from attached drive. Maybe there is more unofficial SATA II/III cards that support booting for this machine (I will use OS X Leopard) ? I've heard that these models support JBOD firmware patched raid controllers as normal SATA interfaces. I just want to upgrade my G5 with ssd, but the internal SATA I does not provide acceptable speeds especially for SSD.

Thanks!

There's probably lots of cards that work with your G5 but just have not been tested with one.

I don't have a PCIe G5 but I read once that a Sonnet Tempo SSD on a card would work with your machine. Maybe  one of their eSATA cards will also work.

I have a number of PCIe cards. Wish I had a PCIe G5 to try them on. It'd be interesting to find out

Yes, in general they are working, but most are not compatible with OpenFirmware, only with EFI on MacPro. So it will be detected and will work on G5 but booting operating system won't be possible without a proper OpenFirmware support.

Sonnet seems to think their card works with a G5. Why not check with them?
