| 512ke EMP blasting disks on cold boot? |
Posted by: blusnowkitty on 2020-03-31 15:35:52 Just a little weird something I’ve noticed with my 512ke ever since swapping out the original 800k with a replacement 800k...
If I have my 512ke turned off and I insert a disk, then turn it on my boot disk ends up corrupted at the best and completely erased at the worst. I guess the solution is to just make sure no disks are near the machine on a cold boot ala Coleco Adam, and I’ve also gone and ordered a Floppy Emu, but has anyone ever heard of something like this before?

What happens when you start it, THEN insert the disk...does it work fine then? As long as I keep the disk away from my 512ke while it's warming up, yep!

Posted by: LaPorta on 2020-03-31 17:00:02 I am not sure what would be going on. There have been many, many experiments done with super strong magnets and disks, and they failed to corrupt the disks (outside of huge bulk tape erasers and things designed to specifically wipe magnetic media). Maybe something on the analog board is causing a strong magnetic field from a short or something?
Do you have another disk drive to try in there?

Posted by: blusnowkitty on 2020-03-31 17:44:03 I've got a couple disk drives coming from the VMM as well as a Floppy Emu just to see if it's not an EMP blast.

Posted by: blusnowkitty on 2020-04-06 16:31:38 Seems like it's not an EMP blast, I think... An 800k external and a Floppy Emu was able to successfully boot my 512ke. However, I did notice that the Floppy Emu was resetting a lot when the 512ke was trying to boot. Perhaps I have power supply issues? I did just do a recap on the analog board so that shouldn't be it. Bad IWM? All I can think of right now is that somehow power is getting cut to the floppies/IWM in the middle of a read or write which is causing the disks to become corrupted.
