CRT Anode Cap removal on Color Classic
Posted by: MDMacGuy on 2016-02-13 07:07:58
Getting ready to tear down my Color Classic this morning so I can begin retr0brighting it, and I'm a little confused with the anode. Does the cap just pull off, do I have to wiggle it, or is there some magic trick that I have to do to get it off?

Also, I presume the control board that is attached to the neck pulls straight off after I cut the glue?

You should lift the rubber pad, then squeeze the clips holding it to the tube.

Keep in mind that the tube is a fragile unit, and for the sake of security (never had any issue so far) you can discharge the CRT.

Yes, the control board is removed that way.

Hey Mdmacguy,

Have you retrobrighted before?

Be careful with that cap, improperly discharging the CRT could cause some damage (or so I've heard). I wouldn't say discharging the CRT is required though, since you're putting it right back in after you're done.

I have not. I am going to practice on a keyboard and mouse here in a bit.

Well, let's see how this goes. Started with a keyboard and mouse. Built a "cell" of such to help with the brightening.

Try just painting peroxide with a small brush in liquid form and then cling fim the keyboard, it worked a treat on mine and saved stripping it down and taking the keys off, obviously you still need the uv as its the chemical reaction with the peroxide and the uv liggt that reverses the yellowing.

Wow a full strip down! 🙂 nice work

Yea, I tore it down the other night. The whole thing smelled like an ashtray and needed a good scrubbing.

You make this sound so easy 😛

I've tried to get mine out... I squeezed that cap and still couldn't get the clips out. Scared of breaking something... and that cap is just not as easy to grip. Just a matter of squeezing for all it's worth?  Other compact caps seem much easier to get out.

The Colour is by far the easier one, the clip is thinner, once the rubber plug is lifted, it's a matter of seconds.

Use a screwdriver and push one side of the clip only if you think is easier.

Lift the rubber plug with a srewdriver too

It helps if you sort of rock it, with or without the help of the screwdriver. What you're trying to dislodge looks a lot like the springs inside the head of an old Christmas ornament (do people still have those?), only with little feet-extenders. Pinching alone might not press the feet close enough together to release both at once, but if you pinch and try to dislodge one foot at a time, it comes out easier.

Awesome help guys, thanks, I will give it a go!

Yes, IIRC the Color has also a washer above the feet, so moving this washer apart will help for the removal.
