System 7.5.5 using 130megs???
Posted by: pcamen on 2020-02-26 16:57:04
What the heck is going on here?

I have an LC 475, a full 040 overclocked to 33MHz I got from eBay / MacCaps. Not sure if that is germane.

I booted it up using a SCSI2SD unit I had copied off my SE/30.  With nothing running, the system software is taking up 130MB.

If I disable extensions and reboot, it only (ha) takes up 128MB.  Hmm.

I'll post a pic from my phone next.

You have 32-bit addressing turned off. Turn it on in the Memory control panel.

Without 32 bit addressing only 8MB is usable. The OS blacks out all the rest.

Ah.  ha ha ha.  SE/30 says it all.

This is going to be one of my favorite machines:

- As fast as a Q650 with co-processor / full 040.

- 128MB RAM

- SCSI2SD

- 1MB VRAM for a pretty nice resolution at 256 colors.

I've got LC PDS ethernet cards for it too.

Hmm.  Turning on 32 bit addressing created a new problem.  Now the Monitors control panel will only do 640x480, whereas under 24 bit addressing, it allowed me to to 1172x870 (or something like that).

Any ideas on that one?

Okay, that's strange.  I rebooted again after (only) increasing the disk cache size and the higher resolution came back.

Strange.

Gonna do a fresh install onto a SCSI2SD for this one.
