SCSI2SD Card Size Limitations?
Posted by: Paralel on 2016-02-10 23:10:59
On the Wiki for the SCSI2SD it says the maximum card size for micro SDSC cards is 1 GB.

Does anyone know why it says that? Is there a reason for this limitation?

I recently installed a v5.0a SCSI2SD, with the latest bootloader and firmware with a 2 GB micro SDSC and it seems to be working just fine. I created a single HFS partition that is ~1.75 GB and its booting, reading, writing, etc... without issue.

I was trying to think of a reason why the micro SDSC would be limited to 1 GB but I couldn't come up with a good technical reason, hence my asking, I figured someone here might know why.

Could be the fat16 format per the spec for SDSC, versus fat32 for SDHC & SDXC cards?

Personally generally seen up to 4gb SD(SC) but found compatibility issues with them, and only early 1GBs were fine.

Per this summary, seems the sizes are not relevant. The SCSI2SD takes SDXC and that standard is backward compatible with SDSC hence it probably sees it as sdxc. I noted somewhere that firmware upgrades could make sdsc readers work with sdxc, so it seems an arbitrary limit (one not recognised in this).

Best ask the maker at the codesrc wiki site...

Moved to Peripherals.  The SCSI2SD can be considered a finished product these days I reckon, rather than a Hack & Development.

Fair enough, I debated between the two, and I wasn't sure if since it's not an "official" product from Apple, or of the time period, if it was appropriate for "Peripherals". Now I know.

As far as the topic at hand, I have seen 4 GB standard SD cards as well, and they also had problems, but 2 GB, in theory, should be ok.

I've used plenty of SD cards of various formats (micro, standard) that are 2 GB that work just fine. Is the general consensus that its just an abundance of caution on the SCSI2SD's developers part?

That or the wiki entry hasn't been updated for a while.
