Macintosh Performa 600 for making 800k floppies
Posted by: altayd9 on 2019-12-25 18:56:38
I am trying to find a Mac newer than my Macintosh plus to burn 800k floppies for it and there is a Performa 600 without a CD drive for sale in my area at a good price and I'm wondering if it has the capability to read both 1.44mb floppies created with Windows and to actually burn in 800k format.

If it shipped with a 1.44MB floppy drive (looks like it did) then you'll have no issues writing 800k disks. Reading PC formatted disks depends on if you have the PC Exchange extension loaded.

The poor man's way of writing Macintosh 800k floppies (if you lack OEM 800k disk blanks) is putting a piece of tape over the non-write-protect hole (one without the switch) of a 1.44 MB disk.

Any Old World ROM Macintosh can write and read 800k floppies AFAIK. Everything from the SE Superdrive till the last beige Power Macintosh G3 (pre-blue-and-white G3 towers), i.e. any Macintosh with a native floppy disk drive.

Really the exceptions are USB-based floppy drives, which can only read/write Macintosh 1.44 MB floppies (and DOS floppies w/ PC exchange)
