Powerbook 170 won't boot
Posted by: mc9625 on 2016-02-06 05:11:56
I've just received an old Powerbook 170, it was working last time someone used it (I guess 10 or more years ago). But now it doesn't boot.

When I do switch it on (with or without battery) nothing happens. I've just plugged the earphone and I can clearly hear the start up sound, but nothing more happens.

Is the sound meaningful of anything? Is there still a hope for it to return to live?

Thanks

M

I you can hear the start up sound, that is a good point.

Any problem related to screen maybe (screen brightness, backlight,  capacitors...) ?

The capacitors in the power back usually goes first (a simple repair). Then the capacitors on the LCD Screen (harder to do). I'm sure its the power pack, even if it not, recapping it will insure that will run a lot better than before.

Also, make sure the main battery is not in the unit. And if someone had it apart to steal its hard drive, they may have never plugged the LCD cable harness back into the logic board. This will allow you to hear a chime on the headphone out, but not the internal speaker. And of course you will have no image with no backlight either.
