IIci PSU shrink-tube optional?
Posted by: ktkm on 2019-11-04 06:54:39
I’m planning an IIcx/ci PSU re-cap. When I opened the PSU, I noticed that some of the capacitors have shrink-tube on them. Is this really a necessity?

Do you mean the Standard wrap with the markings / rating / branding on them, or is there an overwrap?

The standard wrap is also there because the can is often connected to the negative pin

I once saw a video where someone said (while pointing to a bank of caps with overwrap & glued to each other)

that its done to reduce vibration while isolating vibration, because caps vibrate (oscillate) when they are working, which I already knew.

I think it was Ave, or Mr. Carlson, or Big Clive....  Idunno, It's a big tube out there.

Where are the pics?

Picture books are fun.

Those word books are yucky.

You'll be able to get by fine without rewrapping 'em in heatshrink. I've never done it myself and never had issues, taking note from pretty much every PSU manufacturer out there who also didn't wrap 'em in heatshrink.

No extra wrapping. I uploaded some pictures!

Now that was precisely what I wanted to hear! Thank you! 🙂

Interesting, I guess the shrink tubing might be useful containing the mess those old RIFA safety caps make when they explode. 😀

I've never replaced any shrink tubing on any PS I've recapped.

The top of the capacitor in the first picture looks popped to me.

Looks wierd? It seem to be wrapped in paper, besides the heat-shrink.

That is comforting 🙂
