How to open up a 7100?
Posted by: EvieSigma on 2019-10-30 09:31:17
I've never owned any of the machines in the IIvx case before and now I have a 7100/80. Unfortunately my hard drive seems to be bad, and I don't really know how to open the machine up beyond sliding off the top cover. How does it work?

Here's a link to the service manual.

Thank you! Looks surprisingly complicated, no wonder I was looking inside and having no idea how to reach the logic board.

Not complicated at all.

Just unscrew the big flat-head screw recessed on the tip of the rear of the case.

Slide the casing back, then lift up fro. The rear and towards you.

That's it.

To remove the HD, just unplug the cables and there should be a Philips/posi screw that holds the HD to the case and just undo that and it should come out with the caddy/holder.

Yeah, gave the machine a thorough check. Motherboard is filthy but okay, hard drive is unfortunately completely dead. I'll have to dig up some 72pin EDO and upgrade it from it's current 16MB.

The Hard Drive is not necessary dead, what is happening is that the arm has hit the bump stop and lock up and when the hard drive does power cycle and the arm doesn't move then it'll time out and shutdown. Ive repaired several of those by replacing the bump stops with radiator overflow hose.

Cheers
