Smoking SE/30 flyback transformer?
Posted by: pcamen on 2019-10-26 08:40:52
A few months back I fired up one of my SE/30's with a Carrera 030 card and a video card and heard a pop and smelled smoke.  when I opened it up, the video card was blackened like a component in it had let the magic smoke out all over the board.  I've never seen something like this before.

Yesterday, on further examination, I came to the conclusion that the  black on the video board is just dirt; there is a bunch of the same black stuff on the side of the CRT directly next to the video board as it sits stacked on top of the Carrera.

Turning on the unit conformed my suspicion; the flyback transformer, or what I believe is the flyback transformer, was smoking readily.  I tried to take a video but all it caught was the same item sparking.

Can anyone tell me how exactly the flyback transformer goes bad?  I have an extra analog board from the SE/30 I dropped a couple of months back.  I'm just curious that doesn't seem to be the most common failure.
