Macintosh 512K and cables

I have opened my 512K to reinsert the floppy drive and discovered a cable wrapped in sellotape to be in the air.Is it normal or not? I’ve post some images from the cable.

Not normal .. first guess is there used to be an accelerator in there, or maybe a hard drive, and that cable powered it. Someone removed the accelerator and taped up the end of the cable?

There is more going on here than those extra wires, what is the vertical mounted black box opposite of the analog board?  Seems like a lot of hacks are in this system..

This is the mysterious black box.

Also the floppy drive is a bit “down” from its normal position and as a result I cannot insert a floppy disk...

OK, my guess is that is a US spec ( ~120V ) system that was used in another country with different power ( ~220V ?? ).  The wires went to/from this added internal power converter.

thanks,

Has the floppy drive always been like that since you have had this Mac? Or is it a recent problem?

Yes always been like that condition. From the start.I have send it to a guy to fix it but return it back to me in the same condition...

OK, probably the grease on the side of the diskette carrier has hardened into glue. Cleaning the 400K drive is fairly simple.

Thanks a lot!

Guys the 512K needs recapping or not?

Posted by: olePigeon on 2019-09-26 08:45:13
It would be best practice to recap it, especially the analog board.
