So I have a question (again) now that I am getting back to 68k-ing
I know my 840av needs to be recapped.
But what about my 520 and 520c? Do they need "The Treatment" too?
And what other parts of theirs need recapping, the power supply?
I just read the capacitor wiki and they weren't on the list.
Is there any way to store them? like on their side or upside down? I know that sounds crazy, but if leaking is the problem is there a better way to store them so you can reduce the leakage damage at least?
They work great buy the way, fire up instantly and run well. I am thinking about the SCSI2SD also but that's another story. Gotta see how long these will last...

Its been a while since I opened a 5XX series but I dont remeber and can looking caps on it. I have to open mine to put in a card so I will take a look then. If it doesnt have those It will be alot like the Quadra 700 and wont need cap replacement.

Yeah, the power brick would need recapping, not the 520 itself.

So the 520/540/550's except the power brick don't need logic board or display's recapped?? They are a bit of a pain to take apart... and the plastics can be delicate...

For the most part, no. Except for the PSU most of the caps are solid state and will last longer than electrolytic caps.

As I understand it, the same unfortunately cannot be said of the PRAM batteries (a pair of highly inaccessible coin cells, or so I have read). I still haven’t quite been brave enough to extract the dead specimens threatening the recesses of my 540c.

Actually, they're really easy to get at, you can get to them from the battery bay if you want without taking the machine apart. But, the PRAM cells are well sealed, they are encased in nice thick thermowrap, so I doubt they will be much trouble if you leave them in place.

Wow, good to know! I want to do something about them for usability purposes, too, so I will hopefully find time to dig into that this weekend. I still haven’t gotten around to actually writing my planned Poor Man’s PRAM Substitute system extension (simple in concept; back up the PRAM to disk at shutdown time, then restore it as early on as possible during system boot).

but what pram settings are so needed? I have one that has a dead battery but, I don't really worry about the pram settings, I just make sure network time fires up at startup and I am good. 😛

Less urgently, I really like the idea of not having to reënter all of my desktop settings every danged time I boot or reboot the wretched machine. Back when System 7 was current technology, I was (for lack of a more accurate term) a power user, with 20–40 system extension icons rolling across my boot screen in two or three rows. I am fairly particular about how I want my UI to act, so in the absence of working PRAM there is significant irritation to be had!

Woohoo! I knew that functionality was too useful to not have already been implemented by someone! Having been beaten to it by fully 21 years was a bit of a surprise, but I vaguely recall that dead PRAM batteries were a familiar nuisance even that far back, so I can’t really call it THAT startling.
Thanks very much for the link! I am especially grateful given that poking around in the parent folder reveals quite a few vintage system add-ons that simply were no longer online to be found when I last tried to do so, a few years ago.
