Help me get on the network
Posted by: UnaClocker on 2019-07-26 20:15:49
Hey guys.. So I've been gathering parts and finally have a whole set. I've got a 10mbit network hub, it's got 4 10base-T ports (modern cat5), an AUI and a Coax port. Scored that puppy at Goodwill. I was like, sweet, I can buy one of the more affordable ethernet cards on eBay now, because I can go AUI or Coax from the card, to this hub, then cat5 from this hub to my modern switch. The uplink works, the hub is definitely talking to my modern high speed LAN no problem.

The card is an Asante, which seems to be a fairly common card for this generation of Macs (this is in my IIci). I've got System 7.5.3 installed. I tried MacTCP, and then after googling, I figured out how to switch MacOS to the more modern Open Transport, which was installed already and just waiting to be used. Still no signs of life. I've tried setting it to DHCP, I've tried manually setting an IP. I don't know of any utilities built in to test or diagnose it on this old OS, so I've been trying to ping it from my modern Mac. No reply, "Host is down".. I know I've got the Coax setup properly, T's and terminators at each end. 50 ohm coax designed for this task, 8 foot long. It's all brand new. Do I need to install a driver for the Asante card? That'd be my best guess. Maybe I need it in a specific NuBus port? It's in the far left (as viewed from the front) port.

Thanks!

Yes, Asante cards usually required drivers.

Their website used to have a great driver and documentation archive but that's gone now.

https://www.applefritter.com/node/4693This driver from AppleFritter might help.

Yes, you’ll need a driver, the one @nglevin linked should probably work fine.  They’re available on the Garden and elsewhere also, if I’m not mistaken.  If all else fails I have an original Asante floppy somewhere I could upload.

No luck still. I do believe I have the driver installed now. But even manually setting an IP, I can't ping it from another computer on my network, and it can't seem to go anywhere. Drat.

Alright, I picked up an AUI to 10Base-T transceiver, and my machine is now happily on the network. 🙂

Unaclocker,

I have a similar set up except with a plus (can’t run open transport) and I’m running normal RJ45 from the card to the hub and Macweb still gives me an error. I believe I don’t have my mactcp configured properly. Could I ask for your advice?

thanks,

justin

@WakelessFoil MacTCP has to be manually filled in.
