Compact Mac Server
Posted by: Byte Knight on 2019-07-20 08:35:17
Hey guys,

I've been playing around with Netatalk on my Raspberry Pi and have a classic Mac server up and running over the net!  It's kinda like a next-gen AE Line for all you old Apple II users out there...

The server mostly has B&W Mac games on there now, but I'll be adding lots more compact Mac stuff in the future.

Point your Chooser towards classicmac.ddns.net

Name: p*i*

Password: c*a*p*t*a*i*n

Remove the asterisks when you actually sign on...

For OS 7.5 - OS X 10.4.  You'll need the latest versions of AppleShare and OpenTransport available here to connect.  My SE/30 with Ethernet card connects up flawlessly.

Hope to see you there!  Leave a SimpleText message if you do get on.

Two users so far - woohoo!

I accidentally found out that my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.12.6 can transfer files to and from the server - the server just showed up in Finder one day and I clicked "Connect".  I assumed that modern Macs wouldn't be able to connect to older versions of Netatalk.  This is another nice way to get files from my modern Mac to my old Macs (ftp is what I was using before this).

Nice... What is the oldest system that you're able to connect to it?

Ive got FreeNAS for my needs, the oldest System is Mac OS 7.6.1 that can connect to it via AFP, Im able to connect to it via my MacBook Pro and 68k mac with ethernet can connect to it. I've had Macintosh IIci connected to FreeNAS.

Cheers

Nice.

Just connected with 10.13.6

This will be something I'll have to look into for my home network.

I can connect up to it with my SE/30 running OS 7.5.  I haven't tried OS 7 yet.

What's cool is that I already use this Pi to run TCPser in order to emulate a Hayes modem for my BBS, and it was just sitting there idle most of the time anyway...

I installed A2Server which contains Netatalk v2.2.4.

You forgot to leave a SimpleText (or TextEdit in your case) message in the "I was here!" folder!  🙂

Via FTP yeah?

I can connect via FTP at 7.1 which is good enough.

Cheers

No, I'm talking via AFP - my SE/30 running OS 7.5.5 can connect to the Pi file server.  I haven't tried to connect to it with any earlier OS versions...

Almost 100 B&W Mac games on the server now!

I also added an Apple IIgs folder after finally figuring out how to connect up my IIgs with Uthernet II card via AFPBridge.
