IIc and IIGS Key Caps - Interchangeable?
Posted by: Scott Baret on 2019-06-23 18:00:48
Are the key caps from the IIGS keyboard and the IIC interchangeable? Specifically hoping to swap out an option key for a closed Apple.

I know the first rev of //c has different keyswitches with incompatible keycaps… I believe it changed in later revisions.

The later Apple IIc with memory expansion (A2S4100) and the IIc plus should interchange with the IIgs keyboard as they have Alps key switches. Just note that they keyboard on the IIc likely does not have keycaps the same color as the IIgs.

The GS has a few different keyboards floating around too... different switches underneath the caps, so those caps may not even be interchangeable with each other!

Short answer, No.  I tried this with an ESC key and found that not only the key itself was too tall for the //c board, but the orientation of the switch was vertical on that particular key as opposed to horizontal on the //c.  I'm not sure if that holds true for the option key, but in either case, it will stick out noticeably from the rest of the board.

No, they look similar from top but they are different on bottom and height.
