*Wanna know the ultimate* accessory for a Dual-Processor "Quicksilver" PowerMac G4?**
Posted by: Huxley on 2019-06-21 10:04:11 A second Dual-Processor "Quicksilver" PowerMac G4! Some of you guys may remember that I recently found a Quicksilver G4 (800MHz) and have been fixing it up over the past few weeks - new speaker, deep-cleaning, SuperDrive installed, max RAM installed, hard drive added, upgrade to dual-G4 @ 1GHz, etc. Funnily enough, the Craigslist bot that lead me to the Quicksilver popped into my email again the other day, pointing out that someone in my region was selling another Quicksilver for only $20. I reached out and was able to make arrangements to pick it up. This 'new' Quicksilver was owned by the seller's father who bought it new. He used it for extensive writing and graphic-design work before retiring, and it has literally never left their home prior to yesterday when I picked it up. After the computer was retired the previous owner removed "all the memory" to protect himself from data theft, which means he took out the hard drive, the hard drive cable, the RAM and (oddly) the CPU fan. Go figure! After it was no longer in use, the family used it as an end-table alongside their couch for 10+ years In any case, I bought this second machine for the following specific reasons: 1. The outer case is gorgeous - the machine never left the home of the original buyer, and it shows - there's virtually no wear or scuffing on the outer plastics. It looks darn close to brand-new, other than some dust. Hell, it still has the original "S U P E R D R I V E" sticker on the DVD tray. Mmmmm minty! 2. I spotted some sort of PCI card in the (very low-res) pics from the original Craigslist post. I now know that it's some kind of SCSI card, but I don't have details yet 3. It's got a Zip drive with the special faceplate / bezel to make it look correct in the case 4. It's got the dual-CPU module installed! Given that I just paid nearly $100 for the same module, it seemed silly not to snag this one and see if I can make back the money I spent on my CPU upgrade, more-or-less Assuming the CPU board works, I'll probably list it (and maybe the motherboard too) in the Trading Post here, Once that's done, I may migrate the internals of my first Quicksilver into this case, since it's in such great condition. Fun!

Also, the S U P E R [circle] D R I V E graphic always threw me off, I don't think I realized it was an actual Apple thing, because it's not like they had one for C O M B O D R I V E and this is the second generation of machines to have superdrives. The searches for ULTIMATE G4 setups In general, we [collectively, as enthusiasts of vintage Macs who also like fast OS9 machines] know what all the fastest options are, and any given setup is really just going to be deciding about how ultimate is needed in any given situation, and what particular choices balance into building a particular machine. Any duallie G4 is generally better utilized as an OSX machine anyway.

Even though it's not an exact match, the 17" CRT ADC studio display would be a neat addition to a QS/QS'02 setup. The tray that lets you stack two hard disks would also be nice to have.
Posted by: olePigeon on 2019-06-21 15:00:22 I have a CompuCable GDock on my QS. Adds serial, ADB, doubles as a powered USB hub, and also has a slot for a floppy, zip, or whatever you want (mine has an LS-120 installed.) It's pretty darn cool. I also have a Stealth G4 port.

Adds serial, ADB, doubles as a powered USB hub, and also has a slot for a floppy, zip, or whatever you want (mine has an LS-120 installed.) It's pretty darn cool. I also have a Stealth G4 port. Oooooh, that CompuCable GDock sounds cool! Don't think I've ever heard of that before. Could you post some pics?

Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2019-06-22 07:38:29 Sorry, I thought you were looking for an ultimate processor upgrade since you're swapping things around. I'd suggest searching for a set of Final Cut Pro Key Caps. Even if you don't intend to use them might not be an ultimate accessory in that case, but it's s striking personalization of the baseline system. I've got the FCP dedicated Ikey board, but the styling isn't perfect for QS, whereas a set of caps for the Pro KBD would be a striking personalized upgrade.
Posted by: olePigeon on 2019-06-22 13:58:36 Oh, nuts. I took a second look at my G-Dock, and it actually doesn't have ADB ports. It has instead 2 Geoports, Parallel port, and 6 USB ports.
