Apple disk drivers on unsupported drives
Posted by: Syntho on 2016-01-20 05:53:19
I have some 36GB SCSI Cheetah drives laying around. I can't use the drive setup app to initialize the drives when I want. I can use other utilities and format them and use them fine but it still eggs me that I can't use Drive Setup. Is there a workaround for this?

Yes the Apple Setup will only work with drives built for Apple. You can patch the utility, but some third party ones will work fine (Lido, FWB Hard Disk Toolkit) with no issue.

You can patch Drive Setup and the earlier HD SC Setup with ResEdit easily enough, if you really want to use the Apple utility.

Or, if you're installing on a sufficiently old Mac, another solution is to use the boot disk for installing A/UX. For whatever reason the version of the formatter included with that has the Apple-branded-drive lock absent.
