File Sharing with 6.0.8
Posted by: LaPorta on 2019-05-10 20:27:02
Hello everyone,

There's something I am trying to do which I think is rather impossible, after trying it a few times. I am looking for a way to share my Mac Plus' hard drive the same way that you can easily share files on System 7 and up, but under 6.0.8. I have tried AppleShare 2, which works, but only as a dedicated server (not to mention doing a number on the System Folder itself). Am I correct in believing that Apple never saw the need for individual machines to share files until System 7?

@LaPorta I know that you certainly can share files pre-System 7, I just don't have any expertise with System 6 or older.  Some Googling indicates that what you probably want is AppleShare Workstation.  That'll give you the client-side for AppleShare 2 or 3.

AppleTalk and AppleShare were designed for easy, low-cost file sharing.  It was very, very popular in law offices as it made file sharing very easy.

As olePigeon mentioned, it can be done with System 6.  I remember way back when that we had an SE/30 (and it may have had 6.0.5 or 6.0.7 rather than 6.0.8) and it served as a RIP for an imagesetter.  And I know we had AppleTalk and I know I got files to the SE/30 over AppleTalk because many files would have been too large for a floppy.

I’ll look into the workstation then. The issue I’ve had is it appears that no-directional file sharing isn’t built in like System 7. I can connect to servers, but not share anything from the Plus.

The (expensive, as in something like $1000) server software AppleShare 3 was released in the early 90s to work with System 7, at the same time that a stripped-down version was also rolled into System 7, but there were earlier server versions in the late 80s, as early as 1987 I believe. Presumably there was an AppleShare and an AppleShare 2. My guess would be that what you want, what you really really want is AppleShare 2.

If you wanna be my server.

My read on it was always that prior to system 7, you dedicated a machine to be a server, because the hardware wasn't really up to the task of running both as a server and as a desktop machine. Especially '000 based compact Macs.

Yes and no... But there were also 3rd-party solutions. Look into TOPS file sharingEasyShare, and MacServe.

I’ll look into the workstation then.
Workstation is the AppleShare client. It's not a server.

In his very first post he said he already tried AppleShare 2 as a server, but couldn't find a way to connect and share files.  I assume he was looking for the client software as well.

I did get AppleShare 2 to work, but it only functions as a stand-alone server, meaning you cannot share files and use the Finder, etc at the same time.
