| LC and Classic II |
Posted by: JustG on 2019-02-16 16:11:52 I had been watching a dual 800k SE on Craigslist for the past couple of weeks and had planned to go and pick it up this weekend. It was about a 100 mile drive so today was the first time I'd have the time to make the trip. Someone snagged it yesterday, fortunately before I made the journey.
I was a little bummed since I've been wanting one for a while. I figured since I had the time set aside, I'd go and check out a local surplus electronics store I'd never visited. After walking the isles, tucked in the corner was a LC and a Classic II. I struck a deal with the owner and returned home with my new acquisitions. Neither power on. I pulled the battery from both boards and upon close inspection both have leaking capacitors. The Classic now will power on but has a garbled image on the screen, the LC is still totally dead.
I figured that this would be the case and the two inexpensive computers will make for my first attempts at recapping logic boards. I'll need to figure out what capacitors I will need for both, order and then get to soldering.

Posted by: JustG on 2019-02-17 06:41:22 I plan to dig into the power supply too on the LC. I've starting looking at capacitors the number of choices on Digi-Key are daunting.

I'm somewhat near-ish, so it would be within the realm of possibilities for me to visit this place. Do you know its name?
Also, I have an extra 800k SE, if you'd be interested? It worked fine when I put it in its bag... five years ago...
I should get it out and test it. Fortunately SE's are very robust, and aren't prone to cap leakage like other Macs of the era.

Posted by: JustG on 2019-02-17 16:03:37 The place is called Surplus Stuff on Folsom Blvd. in Sacramento. Not the nicest neighborhood, right next door to a flea market.
It's a small store but packed. I snagged the only Mac items I found and left my name and number with the owner. There were a couple Apple Monitor IIIs on the floor.
Definitely interested in your SE.

The place is called Surplus Stuff on Folsom Blvd. in Sacramento. OK, thanks!
Not the nicest neighborhood, right next door to a flea market. Just gotta go there during the day and be careful.

Definitely interested in your SE. OK! I'll have to find it and drag it out of storage so I can test it. It could be awhile as I'm busy cleaning out the house to prep it for new paint, but I'll do my best.

Posted by: Scott Baret on 2019-02-17 21:31:55 Is that by chance the SE that you needed the Apple logo from me for? I still remember sending that one!

Posted by: CC_333 on 2019-02-18 01:43:30 @Scott Baret I don't think so; that one has long since been dismantled and its parts used elsewhere (some of which may have made it into this one, but I don't remember specifically), although I bet I still have the case somewhere. Do you want it? 🙂
I think you also sent me a bunch of feet, didn't you?
I just realized also that I mentioned that, as a possible trade for something I know not what, I had some edutainment software you may be interested in... four years ago!
You wouldn't happen to still be interested, would you? Most of it is for PCs as I recall, but it's mostly old enough to run on DOS, Windows 3.x or 9x, so maybe you could expand your fleet to include some old Pentium-based laptops or something? 😉

Posted by: JustG on 2019-02-18 05:07:44 I'm in no rush for the SE so please don't make any special effort.
Right now I'm focused on figuring out which capacitors to order for these two computers.

Posted by: CC_333 on 2019-02-18 14:41:06 OK.
I'll be visiting storage a lot for awhile, so it wouldn't be any special effort for me to pick it up (time permitting).
