Finally got a DiiMOCache!
Posted by: Knez on 2019-02-16 04:49:15
So after some help from some kind forum members I finally found a DiiMO accelerator for my SE/30.

It arrived yesterday and got it unpacked today. Can’t wait for the adapter for it, so I can put it to some use. I wonder if it will make a noticeable difference in performance.

I would imagine it should be quite noticeable.

Nice find! 🙂

Cache alone would make a noticeable difference at the stock 16MHz, but 50MHz? FUGGABOUDIT! Fabulous find.

Oh yeah.  You will notice the heck out of it.  SE/30 with a Diimo 50MHz 030 running 7.5.5 on a SCSI2SD “feels” about as responsive as my modern iMac doing any reasonable thing (web browsing is not a reasonable thing!).  Sometimes I like running 6.0.8 just for the crazy fast boot time.

Such an elegant card compared to the universal PowerCaches.  Congrats!

😢 @joethezombie My socketed Powercache is offended. It hopes you're referring to its little brother the PDS version.

In all seriousness though, that's a great find! I wonder how it compares with mine. Didn't the socketed Powercache (as the name suggests?) get some 'Cache' as well?

Here are some old screenshots of my benchmark results (Speedometer v3 I think? Also, I inadvertently selected the floppy drive for the disk test... so the value for that is off)

Edit: Thanks for editing your post. Powercache is feeling much better now.  😛

@BadGoldEagle

I’ll benchmak my SE/30 as soon as the card is fitted. Really interested to see if there’s any difference speed wise compared to your machine.

And thanks for the kind words everyone! Really a dream come true to have a insanely fast compact Mac.

Ha!  Indeed.  The socketed version is most definitely at the top of the list!

Its first real advantage from the get go is the fact that it doesn't use too much space and you don't have to invest in a Twinspark to add more cards. But judging by the sheer number of chips on the DiiMOCache, it might very well be the fastest of the bunch. I guess we'll see!

DiiMo cache is about 20% faster due to 64kb cache instead of 32kb on powercache.

Cache makes a difference. An Apple 32K cache card makes a difference on the IIci and other companies made 64K and 128K cache cards so the speed must keep improving the more you have.

Oh yeah, for sure.  But the nicest part of the socketed powercache, is the ability to run ethernet and grayscale if you have those upgrades.  Before ProtoCache and @Bolle's card, it wasn't possible to have all those upgrades and keep the bucket on.   But now, with the new small adapter, the fastest SE/30 with grayscale is probably with that DiiMo card.  I should benchmark one day!

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but look what just arrived in the mail for me:

I think I got the last of the DiiMo's from Yahoo Japan - at significant expense!

I'm excited to try it out tonight, which will hopefully resolve my long-standing issue of not being able to run a Turbo040 along with an Ethernet card.

@Crutch had exactly the same issue as me with his Turbo040 so he switched to a DiiMo - I'm hoping I have the same success 🙂

Sweetness, The full monty, boxed! :approve:

Diimo works with maccon ethernet, that was the setup I had running for several years. Used the iisi adapter not the se/30 one.

Very nice!  I'd been watching those auctions and was leaning towards pulling the trigger for a second SE/30 of mine just to see if there was a noticeable speed difference between that card and the socketed PowerCache I've got in my main SE/30.  Glad it went to a good home!

Welcome to the accelerated SE/30 club B)

i have a 40mhz socketed powercache, so not as fast or as much cache as the Diimo. But it is plenty fast enough in Mac OS 8.1 with a IIsi ROM swap. You should give it a go!

now I just need to find an Xceed card to use with my grayscale harness.
