I have never had a 68040 machine compatible with A/UX in my collection.  About a month ago I got a couple Centris 610 machines with exploded capacitors.  I recapped them both but sadly one of the machines just had too much damage from the cap goo to come back to life.  It makes the sad mac chime when I try to power it up.

Last night I installed A/UX 3.0.1 on my working machine.  So exciting to finally check this one off my antique Mac bucket list.

My two cents:

1) Don't throw out that other C610. You got it to turn on and Chimes of Death - so it's fixable. It just requires more work.

2 ) CONGRATS! Hope you enjoy it and do a lot with it!

I had an A/UX 3.0.1 install on my Quadra 700 for all of about two weeks; my hard drive died.  A/UX is fun to play with but it sucks for doing anything productive.

I picked up an 800 that's on the way, and I am finally going to get back to A/UX, my last time was a 950 that I turned into a Workgroup Server 95 with an upgrade kit, back in 1994!  I left the company after setting things up, but I always wanted to play with that A/UX!  and I got tricked by Apple at the time.  Because I remember this so vividly...

The Quadra 800 had been out and I was looking for Spigot etc setup and then I heard and was told to wait for the 840 because the 840 going to be cheaper and include an Apple branded Video Capture and a Geoport etc.  I was like ok I can wait, well the 800 was like $5,000! and the 840 was $3,500!  I talked my friend and myself into getting a couple and we did.  We thought we scored and we kinda did, I had fun with my 840, lots of fun.  But that next year I was like we gotta get a better File Server setup for the 10 Classic IIs I setup for a medical transcription service.  I got the upgrade for the 950, and then was like I am going to get this to work on the 840, and long story short as we all know, that was a NO GO.

I always looked back and said damn, they tricked me kinda into this lower end machine that can't run the NEXT OS, but the rest is history!

How is the setup going?  I finally got mine installed, and copied a jagubox mirror RAR to my ftp on my Mac Pro Server, and I was off to the races!  I got gcc-2.6.3.tar.gz compiled & installed, and then compiled gcc-2.7.2.tar.gz.  I removed the .gz from the tars in my "personal mirror" because I wanted to compile gzip from gcc-2.7.2, that was easy just using StuffIt Deluxe on Mac OS X (10.11.3).

So, I ftp'd them to the machine and compiled.  I couldn't get gas-1.38.1 compiled, but I took the precompiled versions.  If you try to get gcc going so you can "work" or get something done, look for what version is compatible with your A/UX 3.x.x install.

Feels good that it actually "works" like unix should especially when it comes to compiling.  I was leary at first wondering how many "other" packages I was going to have to necro-find (or raise from the dead) googling.  But it wasn't to bad to get A/UX going.

I just want to get ssh setup tonight.  That's the 100% MAIN GOAL!

Oh hey!  I put the project on hold for a while.  I was doing some compact Mac repairs for a friend who was interested in trading for the A/UX machine and I didn't want to get too invested in the thing if I was just going to trade it away immediately.  Then of course life happened and I never got back to it.

I've just been telneting into my box since it isn't usually connected to the web.  The shell is SOOO primitive it hurts.  I forgot what hell life was before tab completion!
