Need some help with getting stuff onto 6.0.5
Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2018-11-27 07:56:50
Have my Mac Portable finally all setup and 6.0.5 installed.

I have Stuffit 3.x installed and Id like to start installing some programs. For example, when I try to open either versions of Disinfectant from here https://www.macintoshrepository.org/2095-disinfectant, the portable says that the application is busy or missing. Im not sure where to go from here. Is it that my stuffit is too old? But how am I supposed to open anything then if it is? All compressed files so far have had the same issue so far.

Id greatly appreciate some assistance and pointers.

Depends how they were compressed. Are they valid applications? If StuffIt has a issue it would likely tell you, what version are you using? Usually, these files were compressed with newer versions. Resources may not be compressed properly if it was done under OS X. You could use Res Edit to see if they have the proper creator codes, etc.

Looking at your link, they are BinHexed...older StuffIt can’t handle that. Get a copy of BinHex, decide then first, then use StuffIt.

Should something like this work?

Power is out, otherwise I'd try it.

I was also trying to open a .bin of macpong. Same error occured.

Ill try and use sheepshaver for decompressing I guess. Then I can use a later stuff it.

That is it exactly. I'd use the disk image. Are you using a modern Mac or a PC?

PC

I can see why you are having a bit of an issue then...how are you getting the files back and forth?

If you are using a PC, you need to make the disk image using an emulator (Mini vMac is my suggestion) then use RawWrite to write it to disk.

I have aa floppyemu, and have been using ciderpress to put files onto disk images.

I have a usb floppy drive. Ill probably end up writing actual disks from within sheepshaver. Ill update with progress! Getting stuff on 7+ is so easy compared to this...

Quite true. I'm curious. Why 6.0.5?

I can always help if needed. I’m an all-Mac operation, so I can extract things, make custom disk images for your FloppyEmu on original hardware and send to you.

6.0.5 was the first thing on the install cd for a portable. Im not doing anything except using some old games and stuff, so it should be fine.

Downloaded sheepshaver and had a bunch of issues transferring files. I ended up getting myG3 tower out and was able to decompress everything, load it on a floppy, and put it in the portable. Worked perfectly, and now Im able to transfer some new stuff there! Most of the stuff doesnt even take up more than a half a megabyte, so dont even have to compress anything again and deal with that.
