Connecting an Imagewriter II to a OS 9 Pismo?
Posted by: Crickster on 2018-11-20 18:26:12
What would be the best way to connect an ImageWriter II to a Pismo?  I've seen Mini Din 8 to USB and Mini Din 8 to Ethernet, but I'm unsure which one I should use if I wanted to print images made in software like Aldus Superpaint or early versions of Photohsop.  Which one would work best in OS 9?

What I'd do is set up a print spooler in A/UX. Where's the fun in a dongle?

Seriously, that's what I'd do. YMMD.

You'll need a USB to serial adapter (and your job will be easier with a 8-pin mini din serial adapter) and an apple printer cable.  I picked up an old usb to 8 pin serial adapter for a pretty reasonable price on ebay a few months ago; I suspect they're not terribly hard to get hold of currently.

If you can find the LocalTalk Option for the IWII then the task is relatively easy.    If the Pismo has serial ports, just configure Appletalk to use one of the serial ports and network the Pizmo to the IWII.    If the PIzmo has only Ethernet, then you'd need both the LocalTalk Option for the IWII and a LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge of some kind.  There were software versions and then there were dedicated boxes like the AsanteTalk and earlier MicroAsantePrint.
