Hard drives
Posted by: Syntho on 2018-11-17 04:28:52
I remember having a bit of trouble getting some hard drives to boot that were not Apple-branded drives on my Powermac machines. I'm going to guess the same thing rings true for a Powerbook 3400. There's a stock 2GB drive in it that I want to replace with something bigger and quieter. Are there any brands and models that I can pop into here that won't give me any trouble?

Never had any issue, but can be lucky.

Unless it's PPC specific buggage I've not heard of, it sounds like the driver issue popping up. Where there's no problem with Apple (ROM?) drives, others require tweaking to boot. I've used HDT for formatting drives from day one, so haven't had any issues. I've never tried the "hacked" version of Apple's formatting utility, but my understanding would be that it does much the same thing for second sourced drives.

I used non Apple drives in G3 Wallstreets without much fuss.

For a 3400, using a Compact Flash is simpler. Larger capacity and much quieter.

I'm looking for a suitable CF adapter and a card. I posted in another thread about the particular adapter that's been confirmed working being out of stock.

I've posted another link re 44 pin to SD adapter.
Cheers
