2 Odd Nubus Video Cards

Found 2 cards in a lot. One says Paintboard LI and the other says Pickles 24 BUG. Any ideas on these? Thanks!

Stick'em in slots and fire up TattleTech, the NuBus/PDS report tells all the DeclROM's secrets. You should get basic function from them using the drivers in the Declaration ROM. Pickles 23 BUG is a new one on me, looks like a nice bit of VRAM on board. DeclROM spelunking time!

RasterOps Paintboard Li looks to be a pretty decent 19" 24bit board.

They both look like 3MB video cards (1024x768 24 bit).  Can't make out what is written under the BUG.

The one ROM label looks home made. Wasn't The Pickle a contributor to LEM?

Provide Quickdraw acceleration but not so fast...

I have done a quick graphic test last month to compare it with some other cards in my IIfx : Apple 24AC, Radius 24XP and a SuperMac Spectrum/24 Series V :

(this MacBench version is based on a 6100 perf.) :

Anyway it's a good card for a large screen.

I don't know the second one.

The second card with all the VRAM may be a

Radius Direct Color 16/24

If it were that or any other Radius card it would have "Radius" printed on the (missing on BUG)) three big ASICs near the DA-15 connector as is the case with the RasterOps logo on their custom chips. The BUG logo on the three custom ICs would make that the name of the company, not the name of the card. The three IC on the three cards (Radius included) ought to be RAMDAC for R,G & B Digital to Analog Conversion.

The second card is a BUG Pickles-24 (I have one of these and a DeskStudio Pro JPEG card for AV Power Macintosh, but sadly no software for either).

BUG were/are a high-end video outfit based in Japan. They made a number of cards for Macs in the 80s and early 90s but it seems they've left the market. I haven't seen the software for any of their older products available, but feel free to use your favorite machine translator on the history section of their website. The Apple-related stuff is mostly around section 4.

Under "BUG" it says "Sapporo Japan" at the top of the card.   Looks like the card model was Mac-VC Rev. B as several of the PLDs are labeled "PAL - MacVC"  

The D => A converter for the display (RAMDAC) is the largish BT chip near the rear plate.   The three BUG chips before that do something else.  Perhaps sling the data out of memory to the RAMDAC at the appropriate time(s).
1
