68000 Macs - RAM Doubler?
Posted by: AlpineRaven on 2018-06-07 04:26:37
Hiya all - Does RAM Doubler or other type of memory control panel works with 68000 CPU to double the memory? Thats something I havent done and keen to use on Macintosh Portable that has 2mb memory.

Cheers

I believe so. Also, take a look at MaxRAM and OptiMem RAM Charger, which works on Plus, SE, Classic, and LC.

I thought that RAM doubler needed a machine with CPU that includes a PMMU, which the 68000 lacks.

I think trag is right.  OptiMem RAM Charger might be what you're looking for.  It dynamically increases and reduces memory footprints on applications as you use them.  However, it doesn't actually give you more RAM, it's just better at managing it.

Yes, you are correct. I just read the RAM Doubler read me, which says "RAM Doubler and virtual memory are mutually exclusive because both require control of the Memory Management Unit (MMU), which is part of the 68030, 68040 and PowerPC processor."
