Mac Classic OS on a single board computer?
Posted by: GeorgeR on 2018-04-17 09:11:58
Hi, I'm new here but have been a Mac user since getting my first Mac, a 512ke, back in the early 90s. I miss the old OS. OS X never really had that look and feel of the old OS in my eyes.

I'm unsure if this has been asked before here. I've been toying around with these Single Board Computers such as the Raspberry Pi and the ODROID XU4 and I'm wondering if any kind of export of the Classic Mac OS (System 6, 7, 8 ) has ever existed or been attempted for these small computers?

It would be terrific if it were possible to run the old OS on the more modern hardware. It certainly should be possible even in emulation.

Thank you,

geo

The Mini vMac and Basilisk II emulators will both run on a Raspberry Pi.

I compiled successfully Mini vMac, BasiliskII and SheepShaver on my Pi 3 and on the Pi Zero W (except SheepShaver)

I put also 8.6 on my Pi 3, it isn't fast, but works!

Thank you!

How about for the ODROID XU4?

I'm working on porting a ARM JIT compiler for Basilisk II from ARAnyM, so you can have fast speed on ARM single board computers. You can check progress here:

minivmac on the Pi Zero W is slow, but then again, I think it's the desktop more than anything.
