Fish smell from my LC, my nose dies everytime I power it on
Posted by: MrGasS27 on 2018-03-23 14:52:53
Hi everybody, yes, you read correctly, when I power up my LC there comes an unbearable fish smell, I've already recapped the Motherboard, but the problem is still present.

How can I solve this? Everytime I power up the LC I die instantly due to the strong smell.

Thank you.

My guess would be capacitors in the power supply. I have a IIgs power supply with the same problem.

I think the same thing, time ago I read about a guy saying that the ELNA caps on his SE/30 PSU caused this strong smell, I never had this problem with my Macs so I ask there to be sure about the source of the smell

Although not all SE PSUs need a recap, LC ones definitely do! My LCII wouldn't even boot before I recapped its power supply. You're "lucky" it still works...

You are better off recapping your LC power supply, especially if it's a TDK one. I've have had to recap about 5+ TDK ones when they died.

Unfortunately I have a TDK PSU in my LC, I'll re-cap it but I'm going to use an ATX on the LC just for confirming that the smell comes from the TDK PSU

The amount of hacking that you'd have to do to get an ATX power supply is not worth potentially ruining your LC board, imo. Just recap your PSU, even if it has not failed yet, there's a good chance it will in the future. It's easier than recapping the LC board too!

Why should an ATX damage my motherboard? I use ATX on Performa 6200, IIci and IIsi, they works perfectly

Ahh I see now that you did an atx conversion on a IIci. Sorry, you should be fine. I think it should work as long as you haveĀ +5V +12V and -5V.

I did an ATX conversion on IIci, IIsi and Performa 6200 (this one with a Mini ITX PSU) and everything works correctly

UPDATE 16/6/2018

I had an ASTEC PSU on my LC, not a TDK one.

However, I changed these caps and... no more fish smell! Now my LC is "usable" :')
