Sony DRV-1000 DVCAM Internal 5.25″ Drive Datasheet - 03.1998

A very long time ago in my early college days, I got a lab that I worked in to purchase these unique, but mostly forgotten internal drive decks that nicely fit inside the Power Macs. I had forgotten all about them until I dug up this old sheet up, and if you were/are a video person, then it might be of interest to you.

This is insanely interesting.

Did Sony ever do anything else to say why you might want to do this, or was the thinking at the time merely that you might want to save some room? I also love that they put LANC and analog output on it, even though most of the advantage of DV output was to import it into the computer (or onto another device) digitally, unless those were for a program monitor.

Going back to that lab, what ended up being the reason these were chosen instead of any of the other more conventional DV or DVC decks? In that particular situation was it just about having one fewer piece of equipment to avoid having walk away?

At that time we were using our primary camera the Sony VX1000 to capture footage via FireWire, but that forced the camera to do double duty and it was always in use instead of being in the field. This was a quick solution that was budgeted as a computer upgrade.

The drives were connected to a first get FW400 PCI card with an internal port, and the AV cables were snaked to Sony PVMs for monitoring. It was not as elegant as having a DSR-20/30 Deck, but it did the trick.
