Powerbook Ti 550
Posted by: Unknown_K on 2015-11-19 15:03:57
Found a decent deal on a tibook 550 G4 I could not pass up. Needed a RAM upgrade and a HD (luckily they left the HD cable installed and all I needed was 4 screws and rubber cushions I had leftover from another project).

Works decently and besides a few scratches and pain scuffing its not too bad. Battery seems 100% dead which is what I expected but at least its there. The hinges seem ok except for feeling delicate as hell.

Has OS 9.2.2 installed on a 40GB HD with 512MB of RAM. Didn't see the point of going OSX when I have so many other OSX only powerbooks around.

Actually the battery does charge now, odd.

Anyone know what type screws you need for the bottom?

Phillips head is all I know, they're not Torx.

I purchased some M2.5x8mm screws for an old HP Ombibook  XE3 I had for 5 + years now and they seem to work fine for the Tibook bottom as well. Granted they are Phillips screws and black compared to the silver torx on the tiBook but they hold it together.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I always liked the TiBooks better than the G3s and the later AlBooks. They're just so pretty (Even if they have a million design flaws...)!

It's a close race between my TiBook and my Pismo.

If you compare machines you need to compare them properly (15" to 15") and I like the Aluminum G4 15's better from the looks department. For 12" I prefer the ibook G3 to the later white ibook G4's, and the Albook 12" looks nicer then the white ibooks as well.

I agree with Falcon. The Pismo is a sexy looking thing. Like a hot date. The TiBook is a clean lined with multiple colors (not just plain all around aluminum). Its like its all dressed up in an expensive suit. So I like both, in different ways.

The 12" AlBook has a certain presence, it's amazingly compact and solid looking.

I've got a 500MHz TiBook and a 500MHz Pismo, both running 9.2.1. Good times. 😀

Stacks of Wallstreets here, no Lombard or Pismo. A Pismo is just a Wallstreet on a diet anyway.

And with FireWire.

And integrated USB. And a faster CPU, strong GPU, AirPort, faster system bus, cooler operation, a higher RAM limit...oh, and two pounds lighter. 🙂

Love my TiBook, carried it around the world with me and it never gave up. Always ran a little hot for my taste though!

Always thought the TiBooks were sharp - just got one and love just looking at it.
