I've just obtained PowerBook 3400 for parts (good board but housing is very poor condition)- really I was after the logic board itself and I got a bit concerned.
Down the bottom of the screen about 12mm is black, the whole screen is shifted up hence no menu bar - see attached photos.
I've plugged PowerBook 3400 into external display - didn't even show any abnormality - as it showed normal, which leads me to believe the LCD screen panel is defective?
I'm trying to work out where the problem is - there is a board inside in the middle of the display I know there are caps - can caps cause that? Is it ribbon flex cable at fault?
Photo 1 - Mac OS starting up - see bottom of the screen is black gap approx 12mm... You can just see the mouse cursor.
Photo 2 - Menu bar cannot be seen but clicked Apple Menu and it'll show... just almost cut off "About this Computer"
Any ideas?
Cheers
AP

I had this kind of trouble with a 5300, but the 3400 has only a 12 inches screen for all models.
