Posted by: uniserver on 2014-01-25 23:50:00 Its funny there was like 16 people in the class.
The guy running the show, he has never seen this many people show up like this.
Guys and Gals too!
My group of 5 friends all passed.
I guess they want to all meet next weekend and pass the general.
they tell me you really need the General LIC to have all the real Shortwave fun 🙂
Looks like i have to keep studying!
I brought my Portable 5120 in for note taking 🙂
People thought it was pretty cool 🙂

Posted by: TheMacGuy on 2014-01-26 00:32:34 Congrats! I got my tech license 2 years ago and hop on it every now and again. Its quite fun!

Posted by: uniserver on 2014-01-26 02:04:41 i wanna play around with the packet data stuff.
|
Posted by: techknight on 2014-01-26 07:54:32 I thought about HAM. But I cant bring myself into getting a license, as I have no idea what I would do with HAM. the interwebz ruined me 🙂 If anything, i would use it to design long-haul wireless networks to get my cable connection out at the campground, but that would be insanely cost prohibitive as the tower would have to be very high.
any ideas?

http://www.pajack.com/stories/pitts/viewdistance.html - thought this was slightly interesting even though its water&lighthouses
gives you are the right idea!
because its will be line of sight communication, distance, terrain , trees buildings are all factors.
or you could buy like 4 of these and kind of set up your own repeater at not too much of an expense.

again it all really depends on the distance from you.

again it all really depends on the distance from you. 30 miles or so. Secluded from any Cell services aside from 2G.

Posted by: uniserver on 2014-01-26 15:18:13 I think its doable man.
the only place you will need some elevation is at the half way point, Your Repeater.
is it pretty flat where you guys are?
|
Posted by: techknight on 2014-01-26 16:38:36 Nope, There is a very tall hill in between, and I dont know of any people in the area in between that I know i could put anything. It gets flat. But, I studied this awhile back using topology data, and I am 990ft above sea level, and there is a point in between the campground and me that is about 1300feet or so.
it would have to be point to point. 🙂
This doesnt include all the trees and forest in between either. So if I were to build anything, it would have to be below 700mhz. Anything higher will be very tough.
|
Posted by: uniserver on 2014-01-26 17:47:19 well i guess you could put the repeater on the hill, that way both sites will be aimed at it. you can make some pretty cheap towers with pvc
obviously the higher the antenna at each site the better.
900mhz will help with penetration but. ya might want to stick with wifi standards.
2.4ghz still has some basic level of penetration. its when you get to 5ghz that you have almost none.
|
Posted by: techknight on 2014-01-26 18:25:30 How could I put a repeater on the hill? I dont own any land there.
|
Posted by: uniserver on 2014-01-26 19:19:26 is there a house up there? You can make a deal with a homeowner, offer them some free wifi, if they let you throw an antenna up.
|
Posted by: techknight on 2014-01-27 19:23:01 I never thought of that ;-)
Guess the only way to know is drive up there and put an antenna on my car to make sure I can hit the house.
|
Posted by: uniserver on 2014-01-27 20:26:47 that sounds like fun.. when you go to do that invite me along 🙂
