Quadro 610 / 6100 hybrid DOS card?
Posted by: HoJoPo on 2014-01-22 16:38:32
Has anyone here tried to take the "Houdini I" Quadra 610 DOS card's riser and use it with the Quadra 6100's DOS card? I've found evidence online that it should be compatible, and you'd end up with a 486DX2/66 CPU instead of 486SX/25, and with sound blaster sound card support. I'm not sure, but it might support networking and some other functions better as well.

Just brainstorming new uses for my Quadra 610... Classic MacOS and DOS gaming box would be kinda a nice combo.

Somehow that just doesn't sound right to me, search around a bit for the "Developer Note" for both systems. IIRC the DOS Compatibility Cards/DOS versions of systems have their own DevNotes as well.

edit: didn't find anything at my usual haunt: http://cdn.preterhuman.net/texts/computing/apple_hardware_devnotes/

Back when I was running a 610, I used a 610 PDS adapter with the card portion of the 6100 DOS card. It ran just fine.

I would add that the 6100 riser for the DOS card effectively converts the PPC PDS into an 040 PDS (meaning the DOS card is actually an 040 PDS card, not a PPC PDS card). I have successfully used a DOS card from a 6100, removed from its riser, directly plugged into the PDS of a Quadra 800. No issues, no workarounds, everything Just Worked.

From that, I would expect that with the correct riser in the 610 it would also work.

Some Google-sleuthing produced this helpful page: http://www.renewingmind.com/quadrados/q610dos.html

...From the page:

I own one of the original Houdini Mac 610s. I removed the 4/25SX board from the 610 PDS adapter and installed a 4/66 board (with sound blaster) from a 6100 DOS kit. The screw holes and connecter are the same on both PDS adapters.

Cool stuff, gotta find one of those cards for my 6100! I love it when my first guess is wrong! [🙂] ]'>

I have the Quadra 610 Houdini 1 card on the way and a Performa 6100 DOS card on the way, both with their PDS risers, and the appropriate adapter cable for video / joystick... for about $100 total from eBay.

Once I have them, I'll let you know how they work for me in the Quadra 610.

There are a couple of Performa 6100 DOS cards with cables on eBay for $74 each.

What are you looking to find out? The last poster before you dug this thread up from its grave hasn’t logged in here since 2018. 😉
