| Mac Plus, can't ping itself? |
Posted by: tendim on 2014-01-05 20:18:47 After much hacking, and perusing a few sites (Jags House, Old Macintosh System Software and TCP/IP and Classic Mac Networking) I've managed to get my Mac Plus up on the internet, kinda.
An odd thing though: I can ping other computers on my LAN, and even outside of my LAN (e.g. google.com), but computers on my LAN are unable to ping the Mac Plus itself. The Mac Plus also can't ping itself. I can do other activities such as connecting to FTP sites with Fetch without issue though.
I thought that ping responses were built into standard TCP/IP implementations.
Any ideas?
System info:
- Mac Plus, 4MB RAM
- System 6.0.8
- MacTCP 2.0.6 (I copied the MacTCP control panel directly into the System folder)
- Apple Network Software Installer 1.4.4 (used 1.4.4 because I could not find a 1.4.5 installer disc that would fit on an 800k floppy)
- Asante Mini EN/SC adapter
- Everything is running off of a Zip 100 drive
Thanks,
-10d

Posted by: shred on 2014-01-08 01:57:50 It's been a while since I used MacTCP, but I vaguely recall that the TCP/IP stack does not get loaded until an application attempts to connect via tcp. Open a telnet session from the Mac Plus to something else & it should start responding to ping requests.

I had the problem that my Classic with MacTCP 2.1 and System 7.1 crashed as soon as I tried to use MacTCPWatcher and ping it self or another computer. But ping from another computer worked as soon as I started a Browser or other programs that uses TCP/IP. If you use MacTCPWatcher don't try ping try dns lookups that worked for me.

The Mac Plus also can't ping itself It's been a while since I used MacTCP, but I vaguely recall that the TCP/IP stack does not get loaded until an application attempts to connect via tcp. Wouldn't using MacPing to Ping itself in effect load the TCP stack?
