6800 Ultra AGP for Powermac G5
Posted by: Macdrone on 2013-11-06 09:41:46
So somehow this beauty was sitting on a shelf at the goodwill for 5 bucks the other day. So I grabbed it, I figure for 5 bucks it was no big loss. It's the BTO version.

Ok now the fun.

Apparently there is supposed to be a firmware fan upgrade for the card. I can't find it, no links, not on Apples site, not on Nvidias site. Everyone talks about it but no download or any such beast.

Problem 2, it requires 10.3.5 or better and so on for 10.4 and 10.5 and all my disks are below that update to install and boot.

I can run it in safe mode and I'm installing what I can. If I can get the safe mode to update to 10.4.6 or 10.5.8 I think I'll be all set except for the firmware update.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to figure out what your stuck point is here. Is it that you need a 10.4 or 10.5 install disc?

You could put the old card back in, and then upgrade to tiger or leopard.

Then, put the new card in, or I may be confused as well to what you are doing.

The G5 had no OS and the ultra needs firmware for the G 5 which i do not have and cannot find. I put an old card in to put 10.4 and 10.5 on it now I have to update or the card won't work at all. Driver issue there that's why it would work in safe mode. Now I need to update (as original installs took a while) and see if I can find the firmware as it controls fan speed for the BTO card. The card is especially for the G5. Uses the 28 volt plug for the fan as its dual DVI rather than ADC.

Oh and my spare G5 decided it no longer want to stay runnin so if someone needs parts let me know.

Perhaps I'm a bit late, but what model G5?

I have mine, and I'm after spare parts (case parts in particular).

It's a dp 2.0 and it boots intermittently. Leads me to believe bad solder or dead CPU. Case is really nice. Kinda only reason I kept it.

This thread confused me too, so I went looking. This page helps to explain the OP's conundrum: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/mac_6800ultra_review/ .

OP: If you scroll down that page, you get the names of the updated extensions to check against your system. Alternatively, might also be able to find what you need by googling those. The truth is, though, that this seems to have been a problem card.

Ya I saw that page but no links or leads to the firmware disk or software. The apple site has a firmware update to 5.1.4 but other sites list the installer as 6, but with that no one lists what system profiler lists as firmware.
